Foto: Gerardo Bielsa, 15 de abril de 2018<\/p><\/div><\/p>\n<p><strong>One of the most traditional activities undertaken by practitioners of alpine skiing or ski mountaineering<\/strong> is reaching the summit of Aneto on skis, not just so they can take in the breathtaking views of the highest peak of the Pyrenees, but so they can enjoy the <strong>almost 1,400-metre descent awaiting them<\/strong> between the sub-peak and Plan d&#8217;Aiguallut.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>north-facing nature<\/strong> of this route means that the snow hardly transforms for several days, with the <strong>advantages<\/strong> (skiing on powder snow) and <strong>drawbacks<\/strong> (skiing on untransformed snow which is not very stable) that this entails.<\/p>\n<h4>Before you begin&#8230; #PlanEquipAct<\/h4>\n<p>In addition to ensuring that you <strong>#PlanEquipAct<\/strong> to prepare yourself for <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/montanasegura.com\/montana-invernal-con-seguridad\/\">winter mountaineering<\/a><\/strong>, remember to check and <strong>pay close attention<\/strong> to the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/montanasegura.com\/boletin-de-peligro-de-aludes\/\">avalanche report<\/a><\/strong> for the day of your activity.<\/p>\n<p>You should also consult the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/montanasegura.com\/escala-de-clasificacion-del-terreno-de-aludes-o-herramienta-ates\/\">ATES, <\/a><\/strong>or <strong>avalanche terrain exposure scale <\/strong>maps for the Aneto region, which you can find at <strong>this link. <\/strong>It will help ensure you <strong>choose the correct route <\/strong>based on your <strong>group<\/strong><strong>\u2019<\/strong><strong>s experience <\/strong><strong>and the current risk of avalanche<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h4>Routes for ascending Aneto on skis<\/h4>\n<p>There are <strong>two main routes for skiing up Aneto<\/strong>, both of which start at<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/anetoseguro.com\/la-renclusa\/\"> La Renclusa refuge<\/a><\/strong>: via <strong>Portill\u00f3n Inferior<\/strong> or via <strong>Portill\u00f3n Superior<\/strong>. In order to get to La Renclusa refuge in winter, you will need to park your car in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/V7x5kcpNUFao9gaf6\">El Vado<\/a><\/strong> and then walk for two hours. You can find the route description and map <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.montanasegura.com\/folletos\/Acceso_Renclusa_invernal.pdf\">on the page on accessing La Renclusa refuge in winter on its website<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The route that passes by <strong>Portill\u00f3n Inferior<\/strong> is less transited than the one that goes via <strong>Portill\u00f3n Superior<\/strong> (which is <a href=\"https:\/\/anetoseguro.com\/ruta-norte\/\">the route commonly chosen in summer<\/a>). It is up to you which one you choose, although you must take into account that if you go late in the season, the Portill\u00f3n Inferior route may not have any snow. However, on the Portill\u00f3n Superior route you will have to take off your skis, while on the Portill\u00f3n Inferior route, you can get all the way to the end with your skis on.<\/p>\n<p>Below is a description of both routes, which we have taken from the book <strong><em>Rutas con Esqu\u00eds \/ Pirineo Aragon\u00e9s<\/em><\/strong><strong>. <em>Tomo IV<\/em> <\/strong>(\u201cRoutes on Skis. After the steeper first 300 to 400 metres, the gradient levels off once you reach 2,550 metres. Jorge Garc\u00eda-Dihinx.<\/p><\/div><\/td>\n<td style=\"vertical-align: middle;\">In the flat area at 2,550 metres, turn left (E) towards <strong>Cresta de los Portillones<\/strong>, walking alongside the wall to your left and climbing up the gap or pass to the right of the peak of the Portill\u00f3n. Try not to mix this up with the <strong>Falso Portill\u00f3n<\/strong>, which is found further to the left, next to La Renclusa peak.<\/p>\n<p>In order to get to <strong>Portill\u00f3n Inferior<\/strong>, first pass beneath the peak of the Portill\u00f3n and climb diagonally south. After sticking to the west face, head towards the Portill\u00f3n Inferior plain, from where you will be able to see the entire route up to Aneto. Continue south along a long and gentle diagonal trail which joins up with the normal route at the top.<\/p>\n<p>The Portill\u00f3n Inferior route crosses over the glacier at a lower altitude, meaning that it is also <strong>a route that is more exposed to possible avalanches<\/strong> that may start up on the normal route.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<h4>Crossing Portill\u00f3n Superior (2895 m)<\/h4>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"vertical-align: middle;\">\n<p><div id=\"attachment_728\" style=\"width: 360px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/anetoseguro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Aneto-con-esquis_vista-desde-portillon-superior.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-728\" class=\"wp-image-728 size-medium\" title=\"El Aneto desde el Portill\u00f3n Superior. Jorge Garc\u00eda-Dihinx.<\/p><\/div><\/td>\n<td style=\"vertical-align: middle;\">In order to cross at <strong>Portill\u00f3n Superior<\/strong> from 2,550 metres, follow the route to the south. Once you reach a plain at 2,850 metres, turn left (E) to join up with Cresta de los Portillones diagonally. On the way up to the Portill\u00f3n you will see a <strong>rain gauge<\/strong>, which is actually found above the Portill\u00f3n. If you reach this point, you have gone too far and you will need to climb back down to reach <strong>Portill\u00f3n Superior<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>You will need to take off your skis in order to climb down 20 to 30 metres. Once there, a long, gentle climb will take you to <strong>Collado de Coronas<\/strong> (3,208 m).<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<h4>From Collado de Coronas to the sub-peak of Aneto<\/h4>\n<p>After reaching the flat area of the saddle you will have to tackle the final part of Aneto, where the gradient increases, zig-zagging uphill towards <strong>Punta Oliveras<\/strong> (3,292 m). Then the climb narrows and eventually levels off when you reach the <strong>sub<\/strong><strong>-peak of Aneto<\/strong>, which you are separated from by Puente de Mahoma.<\/p>\n<h4>Puente de Mahoma, 3400 m<\/h4>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"vertical-align: middle;\">\n<p><div id=\"attachment_732\" style=\"width: 360px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/anetoseguro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Aneto-con-esquis_puente-de-mahoma.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-732\" class=\"wp-image-732 size-medium\" title=\"Puente de Mahoma al Aneto desde la antecima. Foto de Jorge Garc\u00eda-Dihinx.<\/p><\/div><\/td>\n<td style=\"vertical-align: middle;\">This <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/anetoseguro.com\/puente-de-mahoma\/\">horizontal section<\/a><\/strong> takes you over giant boulders. It is not a particularly difficult climb (grade I), but it is <strong>very exposed, with huge drops on either side<\/strong><strong>.<\/strong> If the rocks are dry, you can cross over without using crampons. In winter conditions, however, crampons are a must, and it\u2019s a good idea for the first group to cross over first in order to guide the rest and clean the snow from the rocks.<\/p>\n<p>After crossing <strong>Mahoma Pass<\/strong>, there is just a short climb on foot to the highest peak of them all\u2026 <strong>Aneto (3,404 m).<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<h4>Descent directly to Aiguallut<\/h4>\n<p>The <strong>classic descent<\/strong> usually goes straight to <strong>Aiguallut,<\/strong> taking the steepest part of the mountain and heading north and slightly to the right. The final part of the descent takes you to <strong>Barrancs Valley<\/strong>, which you then follow north-west until you join up with the route at <strong>Plan d<\/strong><strong>\u2019<\/strong><strong>Aiguallut<\/strong><strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-GB\">Now all that is left is to continue along Plan Baixo d<\/span><span lang=\"AR-SA\">\u2019<\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\">Aiguallut until you return to La Besurta. Despite the large descent, the only problem with this option is that you have to follow the Aiguallut plain in its entirety, as well as the return journey to La Besurta, which can take up to one hour longer.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Return to La Renclusa and La Besurta via Portill\u00f3n Inferior<\/h4>\n<p>The shortest way to get back to <strong>La Renclusa<\/strong> or even <strong>La Besurta<\/strong> at the end of the season is the <strong>Portill\u00f3n Inferior<\/strong> route, although skiing diagonally won\u2019t be as fun. To do this, ski the first section to Collado de Coronas and then head diagonally north, aiming a little beneath Portill\u00f3n Superior so that you can make it over to Portill\u00f3n Inferior without having to push yourself along with your poles.<\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-GB\">From there, you can ski down (except very late in the season) to La Renclusa and then towards La Besurta.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_740\" style=\"width: 740px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/anetoseguro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Aneto_con_esquis.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-740\" class=\"wp-image-740 size-large\" title=\"Panorm\u00e1mica de las rutas para ascender el Aneto con esqu\u00eds.
